TMJ

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint. While that is just the name for the joint but also recognized as the pain and problems associated with that joint. The proper term would be TMD or temporomandibular disorder.

Jaw popping when moving the jaw, chewing, or talking, whether it is painful or not, problems opening the mouth, cheek or jaw swelling, or locked jaw (open or closed) are all symptoms that can manifest with TMJ.

The temporomandibular joint is the hinge that connects the jaw and the skull. Without that joint, it would be impossible to talk, chew, or yawn.

When dealing with TMJ pain, it can be felt on both sides of the face or just one side, and it can last for years or be temporary. Women more commonly experience TMJ, and it appears mostly between the ages of 20 and 40.

Several conditions are known to lead to TMJ:

• Stress

• Arthritis

• Bruxism (teeth clenching and grinding)

• Unstable disc between the ball and socket of the joint
