Teeth Cleaning
Keeping teeth clean requires more than just brushing every day. Daily brushing is extremely important (brushing, flossing, and antibacterial mouthwash at least twice a day) but no amount of brushing will remove 100% of plaque from the teeth.
Teeth cleaning is required to remove the stubborn plaque from between teeth and along the gumline. If plaque is not removed from teeth, bacteria will grow and start to decay the tooth enamel. The decay is called a cavity and requires repair as soon as possible.
Professional teeth cleaning is recommended twice per year. The cleanings are performed by a certified dental hygienist. A scaler is used to remove the remaining plaque. After scaling, a special toothpaste is used to polish the teeth. This toothpaste is very gritty and only available to dentists’ offices. Using it more than twice yearly could weaken tooth enamel. After polishing, flossing is performed, and all debris is rinsed from the mouth.
The dentist will then come in and do a thorough examination to identify any problem areas that need to be addressed.
A goodie bag is given to each patient containing a new toothbrush to replace their old one, as well as samples of toothpaste and floss that are excellent items for an overnight bag.
