Root Canal

When a tooth is damaged and the root is still viable, the dentists at Family Dental Group of Greenville may recommend a root canal for restoration. Some oral infections that enter into the root can be healed with antibiotics and a root canal without having to pull the tooth.

Retaining a viable root is always the healthiest option sought by dentists to preserve as many natural teeth as possible. Medical science has proven that oral and overall health is enhanced by retaining the natural teeth well into adulthood instead of removing them at the first sign of problems.

A root canal is a minor in-office procedure that replaces a damaged tooth and improves chewing, talking, and smiling. A small hole is used to access the inside of the root and allow the pulp to be removed. When an adult tooth has fully emerged, the pulp and nerves that are contained in the root are no longer needed, allowing safe removal. Once removed, the inside walls are dried before filling the root with gutta-percha (a rubbery dental compound). The entry hole is closed with dental filling material, and the tooth is prepared to receive a crown.

A temporary crown is placed during the period of time needed to order a permanent crown. When received, the permanent crown is placed with a stronger type of cement.
