Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are used in several different restoration methods. Crowns are tooth-shaped caps that fit over a prepared tooth to restore the tooth back to its original shape and size.
When a tooth is damaged above the gum line, a crown is used to replace the entire tooth. A crown can be placed above a root canal, an implant, or just the damaged tooth itself. Crowns are also used in the application of other dental appliances, such as bridges.
The type of crown required for a repair will depend on the area of the mouth needing repair and patient budget. Most crowns are easily matched to the color of the remaining teeth unless they are metal or stainless steel.
Crowns made of porcelain that is fused to metal color-match easily but also are more prone to chipping and breaking.
Stainless steel crowns are used for temporary crowns.
Metal crowns are a good choice for back teeth where biting forces are the strongest, but most patients do not want silver crowns in the front of the mouth where they are readily visible.
All-ceramic or all-porcelain crowns are color-matched and sturdy options for the front teeth.
All-resin crowns are more economical but can wear down over time.
